The curtain came down on another long Wessex Premier League season on Saturday with Poole Town in the end emerging as champions with a 15 point lead at the top of the pile.
The final two games for the Dolphins were to be a big shock for their supporters however, with Wimborne Town inflicting a 5-1 win on them at Tatnam last Thursday night and then on Saturday Brockenhurst overturned Tommy Killick’s side 3-0 at Grigg Lane.
Max Frampton in the Brock goal can boast that he is the only goalkeeper in the league to have shut Poole out completely.
Incredibly Poole entered the final match of the season having scored in all 41 previous league outings, but they were unable to find a way through a determined Brock outfit keen to end their season on a high.
Going into the game in the New Forest Poole had scored 144 goals and indeed ended up the highest scorers in the country let alone the Wessex League.
The Badgers ended their campaign in fifth place in the table.
VT FC were only three goals behind the Dolphins and they ended their league campaign with an entertaining 3-3 draw at a resurgent Wimborne Town.
Warren Hunt, Barry Mason and Byron Mason were on target for VT in a game that saw VT’s Kevin Brewster shown a red card following a foul on Wimborne’s Tommy McCormick.
Wimborne came from 3-1 behind to snatch a point and end their season with an 11 match unbeaten run.
VT went two goals up in the opening six minutes before Scott Joyce pulled a goal back for the Magpies.
With only a few minutes remaining it was looking likely that VT would emerge with all three points but then James Stokoe reduced the deficit again and Dave Town grabbed a late dramatic equaliser.
Moneyfields finished the season in third place but were beaten 2-1 at Bemerton Heath Harlequins on the last day.
Had they managed to grab an equaliser they would have scored a total of exactly 100 goals but in the end finished with 99.
Christchurch still have one more match to play but their final league position of seventh is set in stone following their 2-0 success over Alton Town at Hurn Bridge.
Simon Keates and Ben Osborne scored Priory’s goals.
Brading Town ended their season on a high after handing out a 6-0 mauling to Hamble ASSC, who finished next-to-bottom of the table.
The unenviable position of bottom went to Horndean, who also conceded six goals on the final day of the season, although they actually scored three themselves in a 3-6 reverse at Laverstock & Ford.
Hamworthy United’s season is of course still alive with a little matter of their Wessex League Cup final to look forward to against VT at Fawcetts Field, but they finished their league campaign with a 1-0 loss at home against New Milton Town.
Danny Cox was on target for New Milton with a second half volley.
Newport IoW will end their season in sixth spot regardless of what happens in their final game of the season against Christchurch at Hurn Bridge this Tuesday night (28 April).
On Saturday they overturned Fareham Town at home 2-1.
Fellow Isle of Wight outfit Cowes Sports also gained three points at the weekend with a 3-1 victory at Romsey Town.
Finally Alresford Town completed their league calendar with an eleventh win, a 2-0 success at home against Bournemouth Poppies.
