It's all change for the Wessex League.............................Premier Division
on 24/05/06 by Andy Starmore
When the World Cup is over and hopefully we’ve all got massive hangover’s after celebrating an England triumph, it will be all change back in the Wessex League for next season.

For starters the three leagues that they run will be renamed as follows: Wessex One will become the Wessex Premier League, Wessex Two will become Wessex One and Wessex Three will become Wessex Two.

The most important issue though is who will be playing in what division?

The 2005/06 champions, Winchester City, the runners up, Thatcham Town and third placed Andover have all moved up to the newly named Southern League South & West Division.

Portland United pulled out of the league and, BAT Sports are, at the moment, pencilled in for next season’s Premier League.

AFC Newbury look certain to be given the green light by the Wessex League committee to continue in the top flight of Wessex football.

No other clubs will be relegated from last season’s Wessex One, therefore, as it stands, four teams from last season have departed the league, with possibly BAT Sports making it five.

The Wessex League are strongly rumoured to be bringing four other teams into the Premier League, which are Downton, Brading Town, Horndean and Ringwood Town.

The four clubs all meet with the correct ground grading for step five in the non-league pyramid.

Brading finished third in Wessex Two last season, Downton finished fourth, Horndean ended the campaign in sixth spot and Ringwood Town finished ninth.

The inclusion of these four clubs will no doubt upset Locks Heath, who ended up as champions of Wessex Two, fully nine points ahead of second placed Hayling United.

Locks Heath’s ground however is not deemed up to standard for the new Wessex Premier League.

Laverstock & Ford, who finished second in Wessex Three last season and Verwood Town, who finished third, look certain to be going into the new Wessex One when the 2006/07 campaign gets under way.

And Warminster and Gillingham also look set to be included in the newly named Wessex One from the Dorset Premier League.

The Wessex League’s AGM will take place on June 17, when the above issues will be finalised.

Just to recap then, here is the likely line up for the newly named Wessex Premier League for 2006/07:

AFC Totton

Alton Town
