Club history : AFC Newbury is a large and lively football club based in the heart of Newbury providing the chance to play football for boys and girls throughout West Berkshire from seven years old through to the over 40 veterans.

From its base at Faraday Road Stadium, the club has over 30 teams including junior teams, the senior squad, a Ladies and several Girls teams competing in national, regional and local football leagues and competitions throughout the year.

It was formed less than 10 years ago from the resources of three local clubs - Ecchinswell FC (founded 1906), Shaw Boys and Belles Junior FC (established in 1972) and Wickham U17 Youth Team.

The 1st Team achieved Wessex League status in 1996, their first season, by winning the Hampshire League. It also won the prestigious Hampshire Cup.

Having twice already coming close to winning promotion to the Dr Martens Southern League, finishing in 3rd position on both occasions, the club underlined its ambition for progress by appointing former Pompey striker, Guy Whittingham, as 1st Team Manager.

Whittingham, who also played at Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday, has brought valuable experience both as a professional player and a coach to the Senior Squad.

His emphasis on good discipline and regular training combined with his great love of the game, are making a real difference.

He is joined by former Yeovil Town striker Mickey Spencer as team coach and Nigel Wiscombe as the club’s sports therapist.

Despite the club’s relatively short history, the 1st Team has already reached the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and 3rd Round of the FA Vase.

The Reserves Team compete in the Wessex Combination League and won The League Cup for the first time in 2004.

The U18 Youth Team play in the highly competitive Allied Counties Youth League and the extensive range of Junior boys and girls teams play in the Peter Houseman League, the South Chiltern Minor League, the Bracknell League and the Vale and District League.

The Club also runs a Veterans Team that won the prestigious Umbro Veterans Trophy at Villa Park in 2002. There are several well known players with local connections in the side.

In the 2004/05 season for the first time a Ladies Team competed in the Berks & Bucks County Womens League.

This comprehensive playing structure provides a direct ladder for children, youths and senior players to develop and express their football skills.

Strong partnership links have also been forged with senior professional clubs to ensure potential can be recognised and encouraged if the ambition and skills are there.

The club also caters for members of the community who wish to play football but are not part of the club. AFC Newbury run Fun Soccer, Goalkeeping Clinics and, 5-a-side tournaments. They also host many Local, School, County and League Cup finals.

As chairman, Steve Hartley put it: "AFC Newbury has made significant progress in a very short time.

“With continued support from the business community, parents and volunteers, our aim is to continue improving football facilities and opportunities for the people of West Berkshire."
